Bunker IV, Hamburg: A Historic Landmark Transformed into a Modern Hotel

The Challenge: Ensuring Safety and Functionality in a Historic Building

Originally constructed between 1942 and 1944 as an anti-aircraft bunker, Bunker IV has been transformed into a multi-purpose facility, now housing the "Reverb by Hard Rock Hotel" with 134 rooms, a café, a sports hall, and a rooftop garden.

This renovation posed two significant challenges:

The "Mountain Path," a public escape route encircling the building, needed to remain ice- and snow-free year-round to ensure safety and accessibility.

Additionally, frost protection was required for a fire extinguishing pipe on one floor, critical for maintaining the building’s safety infrastructure during Hamburg’s cold winters.

The Solution: Innovative Heating Systems for a Modern Landmark

DEVI provided tailored heating solutions to address these requirements.

For the Mountain Path, around 320 heating elements, including DTCE-300 mats and DTCE-30 cables, were installed, covering a total heated area of 1,100 m² with a connected load of 350 kW.

Prefabricated concrete steps were fitted with heating cables at the factory, while heating mats were installed on-site to the flat areas.

To protect the fire extinguishing pipe from freezing, approximately 1,000 meters of DEVIpipeguard LSZH25 cables were installed, managed by thermostats and distribution cabinets.

These systems ensure reliable and efficient performance, integrating seamlessly with the building’s infrastructure.

The Result: A Safe and Welcoming Space for Guests and Visitors

The Mountain Path now provides a safe, ice-free escape route throughout the year, allowing guests and visitors to easily access the rooftop garden and other public areas.

The frost-protected fire extinguishing pipe guarantees the functionality of the building’s emergency systems.

These heating solutions have contributed to the successful transformation of Bunker IV into a vibrant destination, blending its historical significance with its new role as a modern hotel and cultural hub in Hamburg.
