Supporting constant temperature at Montague Apple Orchard and Warehouse in Victoria Australia

Maintaining a stable low-temperature environment is critical in modern cold storage facilities, where temperature fluctuations can contribute to condensation, humidity-related challenges, and operational disruptions. At the Montague Apple Orchard and Warehouse in Victoria, Australia, a dedicated electric heating solution was implemented to support stable warehouse conditions and help protect critical infrastructure within the cold storage environment.

Established in 1948, Montague is a well-known Australian food producer with more than seven decades of experience in the fruit industry. As part of the development of its cold storage warehouse in Narre Warren, maintaining a constant temperature of 1°C was identified as a key operational requirement to support apple storage conditions and reduce the risk of condensation forming on structural elements.

The challenge: Cold Storage Condensation Prevention in a Large Warehouse

Cold storage facilities often face challenges caused by temperature differences between steel structures and the surrounding environment. In the Narre Warren warehouse, temperature variations of more than 13°C between steel columns and outside air increased the potential for condensation formation.
Condensation can contribute to elevated humidity levels and may affect warehouse equipment, automation systems, and overall cold store operations. For facilities requiring precise environmental control, effective warehouse condensation control is an important part of maintaining reliable performance.

The solution: Electric Heating Cables for Warehouse Condensation Control

To address this challenge, DEVI electric heating technology was supplied through Heat Zone Distribution, DEVI's partner in Australia. The solution involved installing electric heating cables on the warehouse steel columns to assist in maintaining surface temperatures and reducing the likelihood of condensation.

The installation utilized:
  • DEVIbasic Drum Goods
  • DEVIflex™ 18T Heating Cable
With a total installed power of 27,806 kW (project data provided by the customer), the heating cable system was designed to support temperature stability across structural elements exposed to significant temperature differentials.
By helping maintain controlled surface temperatures on steel columns, the solution contributes to effective cold storage condensation prevention and supports stable warehouse operating conditions.

The result: Stabilized Humidity Levels for Reliable Operations

The installed electric heating system supports the stabilization of humidity levels within the cold storage warehouse. This helps create conditions that enable warehouse automation systems to operate within their specified temperature parameters.
For temperature-sensitive storage facilities, effective humidity control plays an important role in supporting consistent operational performance and preserving environmentally controlled storage conditions.
